Please find attached letter from Rev Michael McCaughey regarding First Holy Communion, First Confession and Confirmation.

April 2021

Dear Parent/Guardian,

On Monday 26th April, Bishop McKeown released a statement in which he offers an opportunity for parishes to consider the celebration of First Communion on a provisional date before the end of June. In response to this, the school principals, pastoral workers and priests of Three Patrons Parish, held a meeting by Zoom on Tuesday 27th April.
We are very much aware of the fact that initially the First Holy Communion was postponed until September 2021. So too we have still to confirm dates for Confirmation and First Confession within our parish. It is hoped, again under review by Bishop McKeown, that Confirmation may take place in early to mid-June.
It is important to note that for Three Patrons Parish to facilitate First Communion, considering social distancing and other factors, we need to celebrate 15 masses with 15 classes. Hence to also facilitate First Confession is another 15 celebrations. To celebrate Confirmation within our parish for 12 classes also means 12 ceremonies. This is actually 42 ceremonies each requiring preparation, reverence and time.
All those present for the meeting felt that for Three Patrons Parish it is best to uphold the original decision of scheduling the First Holy Communion for mid-September 2021. We acknowledge other parishes may proceed differently in respect to their numbers of schools, pupils and celebrations.
Various factors were discussed in regard to schools and families in coming to this decision. Bearing in mind, the fact we are in the midst of a Covid situation which is ever changing and trying to avoid great pressure on people/children. However, it is hoped that we will still celebrate First Confession before children finish P4 in late June and then in turn, celebrate First Communion in September. So too, it is hoped that we will celebrate Confirmation in our parish in early to mid-June (according to health guidelines).
Please be assured that this decision regarding sacraments is made respectful of families and the parish community. We take this opportunity to thank people for their ongoing support- the preparation of children for the sacraments both in school and at home is so important and so appreciated.
Please be assured of our prayers at this time.
Again, thank you for your understanding in this matter. We will continue to update you on dates for the various celebrations as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely

Rev Michael McCaughey PP
